10 Things to do in Portimão, Algarve

If you are on holidays in Portimão, in the Algarve, here are some suggestions for things to do to make the most of your vacation!

If you are on holidays in the Algarve, in Portimão, our advice is to think and act like a local, because only then will you truly feel the magic of this region, escaping the confusion of the tourist concentrations.

There are lots of places and things to do, but here are some of our favourite things to do in the Algarve, Portimão…

1. Visit the Local Market

Here you can find the famous fresh Algarvian fish. Now it is summer, there are sardines already, but during the rest of the year, you can taste a lot of fish and shellfish. The fishmongers are friendly and always available to tell a good story.

2. Go to Rua do Comércio

Although some stores have already closed, there are some that remain and share with us some of our history. Clothes, pastries, articles in linen and cotton, shoes …. It is always a good opportunity to look for an original souvenir.

3. Portuguese canned fish are among the best in the world

If you want a light meal, at Maria do Mar you will find good suggestions of canned fish for connoisseurs and collectors.

4. Regional sweets for all tastes

After a taste of the sea, nothing like a sweetie to cheer the heart. In Portimão there are several pastries with regional sweets and homemade cakes, but our preference goes to A Casa da Isabel for the many prizes that have been received and for being a stopping point for residents throughout the year.

5. Our local flavours

At Mercearia do Algarve a local grocery store like in the old days, you can find a variety of regional and organic products with a great idea of what is produced in the region. The regional Algarve bread is a delight and here is sold the bread of Monchique which is one of the most famous and tasty.

6. Praia da Rocha and Fortaleza de Santa Catarina

Praia da Rocha and its extensive beach are one of the most famous beaches of Portimão. Now that it’s summer, of course, there’s no need for a swim. In the rest of the year, strolling on the beach is also very pleasant.

7. Alvor and the ria

Alvor is a few minutes from Portimão and well worth a visit. The view of the Ria de Alvor, a stop at one of the local restaurants or simply wander the streets, are worth it.

8. The Portimão Museum and the history of the city

An old fish factory, which is now a museum, tells the story of the city’s relationship with the canning industry, the sea and the river. An interesting way of knowing the origins of Portimão, the evolution of the community and the most striking aspects of the industrial and maritime history.

9. The Waterfront of Portimão

The riverside area of Portimão, all of it crafted in the typical Portuguese sidewalk is a great spot for a late afternoon stroll. With garden benches along the seafront, this wide pedestrian promenade is a pleasant place to rest and enjoy the scenery.

During these nights people come outside to eat grilled sardines, drink, and have fun in the streets of the popular neighbourhoods, adorned with arches, colourful balloons and scents of basil.

In Lisbon each “Bairro” do a parade in Avenida da Liberdade, filling the road with music, colour and a lot of people. Alfama, Graça, Bica, Mouraria and Madragoa are famous with sings and dances throughout the night. Another high point of these festivities is the procession of St. Anthony, who on the 13th of June leaves his church, located in Alfama, near the Cathedral, in the place where this saint was born, around 1193.

In Porto, the party is identical in color and joy along the most traditional neighbourhoods, such as Miragaia, Fontainhas, Ribeira, Massarelos and others.

But Porto has other traditions: if in the past the revellers beated with leek on the heads of the companions, today they use plastic hammers with the same purpose!

And in addition to the amazing firework that is launched at midnight on the Douro River, colorful balloons of warm air are also launched in one of the most beautiful celebrations of these popular festivities. The night ends  by the beach, to watch the sun rise or for a morning bath, as tradition says.

On June 29, St. Peter is also celebrated, with popular festivities in various localities such as Sintra or Évora, both on the World Heritage list.

Some of these feasts, of pagan origin are associated with the celebration of the summer solstice, featured by dancing, eating and fireworks, all good excuses to take a hop to visit Portugal and discover these traditions so colorful and lively!

And Bike my Side Lisbon custom rides are excelent for this purpose!

Celebrate diversity and take a sidecar ride

One of the most interesting aspects of our sidecar tours is the opportunity to meet different people from several places of the world, of all ages, who end up having in common the fact that they look for a different and unique experience during their holiday’s time in the Algarve or in Lisbon

One of the most interesting aspects of our sidecar tours is the opportunity to meet different people from several places of the world, of all ages, who end up having in common the fact that they look for a different and unique experience during their holiday’s time in the Algarve or in Lisbon.

It does not matter your age, it does not matter your gender or physical condition. The sidecar is for everyone! And it is really incredible how our sidecar tours have an excellent acceptance among people of the most diverse ages, genres and physical circumstances. From 7 years old to 90 years old or more!

In 2015, for example, we had a couple from Hawaii, cruise customers, with the age of 79 who loved our Postcard Collection tour in Portimão.

This year, at the age of 81, they returned to Portimao on a round-the-world cruise and made a point of repeating our sidecar tour because the experience made them feel capable of everything, made them feel so alive!

We have also transported people with disabilities in the sidecar who reported that they felt safe, comfortable and free.

Another unforgettable story was the surprise request for a wedding on The Most Beautiful Beaches tour with the groom declaring himself and making the request at the lovely top of Praia da Marinha cliff.

The stories are numerous, tremendous and it is truly comforting to feel that we provide a lifetime experience. It is incredible! A sidecar ride is actually part of the bucket list for so many people around the world!

What are you waiting for? Celebrate diversity and take a sidecar ride!
